TracFone BYOP Program / Re: List of BYOP compatible phones
« on: November 12, 2016, 09:23:53 am »
I bought a used Note 4 N910W8 (Canadian, or "international" version) a few months ago. All the Tracfone features work perfectly with it.
I have found that unlocked and international versions of phone work very well with TracFone, including my LG G4 Beat and the Moto G3.

Thank you both. I have updated the thread. Sorry for the wait.

How about separating CDMA and GSM?
Especially since the newer ones (MOTO G etc), can do both, but there are various scattered
reviews on how well these phones work with Tracfone CDMA (Verizon).

That's a good idea. I'll see if I can find a way to do it in the thread without it becoming too confusing.

I will add the Moto G and the Nexus 5 and 5X. I am an iPhone user so my brain got the 5X and 5S confused  :D

You should also add the Nokia Lumia 822 and LG Ally to the list, I have tested both on TF and they have both worked with no issues.

Thank you. I've updated the list. The 822 working might also mean the 820 works, since the 822 is just a variant of the 820.

List of phones compatible with TracFone's BYOP program

Welcome! I have decided to make my own list of phones compatible (and not compatible) with TracFone's BYOP program. I have tested only a few phones, so if you have a phone that works, be sure to leave a comment and I'll add it to the list. Keep checking back, because as I discover more phones that do I'll update the list.

What do GSM and CDMA mean?
GSM phones work with AT&T and T-Mobile.
CDMA phones work with Verizon and Sprint.
In most cases, both types will work with TracFone.

This is a huge thread, so if you want to find your phone easily, try using the find function (CTRL+F) on your browser.

LG Optimus Fuel / How to root the LG Optimus Fuel!
« on: May 28, 2016, 10:00:16 am »
How to root the LG Optimus Fuel!

1. The first thing you need to do is install an app called towelroot. On your phone, visit the website I linked (click on towelroot in the last sentence) and click the lambda (λ). It will download a file called tr.apk. Before you can install this app, you must go into Settings, Security, and tick the "Unknown sources" box. Then install this app, ignore security prompts, (they're their for obvious reasons), and move on to step 2.

2. You should see a new icon in your launcher called towelroot, with the familiar lambda from the website. Open that app. Now tap "welcome to towelroot v3" 3 times. A text field should have opened, saying "1337 0 1 0 4 0". Change this to "1337 0 0 0 4 0".

3. Press "make it ra1n".

4. Download SuperSU from the Play Store. If you cannot use the Play Store, it is also available on APKMirror.

5. Open SuperSU. It should ask you to update binaries. You should, and when it is finished it should ask you to reboot. Press reboot, then when your phone boots back up move on to step 6.

6. This step is optional, but I recommend it. Download Root Checker from the Play Store. If you cannot use the Play Store, it is also available on APKMirror. Open this app, and press "Verify Root". A dialog should pop up asking you if you would like to grant root access to Root Checker. Press grant. Root Checker should then say "Congratulations! Root access is properly installed on this device!". If it doesn't, you did something wrong, and you are not rooted.

Thank you for reading my tutorial! I hope it helped you out. I would like to give some credit to user toxinbum on Android Area 51 (a forum, I know I haven't heard of it either until now :D) for this post, which is where I got my steps 1 through 3 from (which I made easier to understand, and I essentially combined some of his steps).

If you need help with anything just leave a comment. I'll reply as soon as I can.

AOSP and Google Apps APKs & Downloads

This is a list of AOSP APKs and links to download them. I've included links to Google's closed source Play Store versions. I have also included APKMirror links for those who do not have the Google Play Store (or whose devices say they are incompatible).
Or at least it will be.
If you could please send me an APK or a link to download it, that would be awesome. Google replaced some of these with their apps. For those, I would like the latest AOSP version. I will give credit to whoever finds them too. AOSP APKs needed are marked with (N/A). I will try to find as many APKs for AOSP apps as I can.

    What is AOSP?
AOSP, or the Android Open Source Project, is what Android starts out as. First, Google develops this. Then they add their apps on top. The Android Open Source Project apps are open-source, meaning you can study them, modify them, and redistribute them. You do not need to (in most cases) ask anyone, or pay a single cent.

    APKs and Downloads:

    Thanks to:
Credits to people who found the AOSP APKs (I will add names in once people send me links or files):
NOTE: I did not list the websites, because I either forgot them, they either forgot them, and because AOSP apps are open source, it doesn't matter. If you would like the specific website I found these files from, simply comment and I'll find it for you.

    Sorry for the late reply

TracFone seems to like to be difficult often and not just give you a list of phones that work with the BYOP.

So far I have tried a Verizon iPhone 5S (my current daily driver) and an AT&T iPhone 3G (just for fun for a bit).
I'm almost certain most phones will work, but I wouldn't guarantee it.

If you call them (1 (800) 867-7183) and get to a human and ask them "Will phonename work with the BYOP program?" they'll probably be able to tell you. (That's what I did)

I would highly recommend you BYOP instead of using a TracFone. Most are bad, and the others are mediocre at best. I would reccomend you get an iPhone, Galaxy, Moto, LG G, or HTC.

TracFone's BYOP program is really good and allows anyone to add any phone to TracFone. Since now there are many TracFone users who use primarily iPhones, Windows Phones, or Androids not sold by TracFone, including myself, I think it would make sense to make boards covering these topics.

Thank you. I've been known to write good (or at least by myself) ;D. Anyway, all I remember was that when I started messing around and I flashed ROMs, I installed a recovery to flash the ROMs (and make backups). I think I only flashed a ROM once, but I might have done it before after modifying some files, but I think TWRP was only installed once. I never uninstalled it. When doing the button combo, it says "Factory data reset" and then, after telling me controls, it says "Erase all user data & restore default settings?", then after selecting Yes, it asks to confirm, and I hit yes again. Then it says "Factory Reset Processing...", shows the LG Life's Good Powered by Android "splash" screen, then just bootloops some more.

General Device Support / LG Ultimate 2 bricked part 2
    « on: April 08, 2016, 05:04:24 pm »
I haven't been on here or using Android as a daily driver for quite a bit, so here is a short story:
I was bored and accidentally deleted lgsystemui.apk one day back in October 2015 (I think)
Then I bought a LG Optimus Fuel with an iPod Touch and in February 2016 I bought an iPhone 5S and put it on TracFone's BYOP program.
Today, I was riding my bike and I checked my phone and dropped it face down. The screen is ok (except it popped out but I put it back) and a few dents. This experience made me realize why I should have a backup phone (one usable since the LG Optimus Fuel doesn't suit my needs). I pulled out my bricked Ultimate 2 and am now exploring new ways to fix it. I asked a similar question awhile ago but now I have learned the basics of ADB (I bought a Fire 2015 that I soft bricked once or twice but fixed it) and I'm also not stupid enough to delete important system files. Of course with my luck, my Ultimate 2 does not show up in ADB. Does anybody have a stock ROM (or at this point I don't care and any rom is fine as long as it is for the phone) and know how I can install it (or to just get the stupid APK on there I was using the LG G3 ROM with TWRP last time I checked). Last time we came to the conclusion to get a replacement or an upgrade, and I just bought a new phone, and it isn't worth it to replace since I have my iPhone, I'd just like to fix it as a backup.

EDIT: I know how to fix this phone if it is possible to enable ADB without the phone fully booting. Which it probably isn't. Don't make this high priority, since this phone isn't my daily driver.

TLDR: I deleted LGSystemUI.apk on a phone, asked about it before, got a new phone, almost broke it, and want to fix it as a backup. What annoys me is that I had a recovery but now I don't (unless I need the SD card for it to work). Or, could I make a bootable TWRP or CWM recovery SD card and then boot from that to fix the phone (or at least enable ADB)?
