Site Discussion / Pop Icon Forum Locked?
« on: December 16, 2016, 02:51:31 pm »
Hi guys! Just curious why the Pop Icon forum is empty and locked to new posts. We have two active phones in my house, and I keep one for a backup (which I'm compelled to use while I sort out my Note4 bootloop/EMMC issues).

There was work here and elsewhere on a rooting process, so it seems potentially worth discussing (though most discussions seem to lead to the conclusion that it's the world's most unrootable device). Aside from the horrible OS that accumulates junk data to the point of inoperability, this is one of the best phones TF has put out, and I really wish it could live up to its potential...

General Device Support / Pop Icon Drivers?
« on: December 16, 2016, 02:34:13 pm »
My family has used these phones for about two years. My mother accidentally reset without backing up phone data, so I thought I'd try a few recovery tools. The stumbling block is windows drivers.

The "official" driver on the alcatel page that people refer to is gone, and I spent an entire night trying drivers from sites like androidmtk and gsmusbdriver, legacy support in device driver, debugging mode, windows 7 and 10. I can connect to the phone storage, but the device driver always fails to install and shows an error in device driver.

Has anyone successfully installed a driver for the Alcatel Pop Icon in any version of windows? If so, could you give me a general idea of the process? Could someone upload (or maybe PM) the original company drivers?

I just want to get back the contacts/sms/call log and have some windows tools that purport to do so. I have several linux machines but haven't looked into recovery software for the OS. I'm hoping I tried the wrong combination of processes on the wrong computer, or my USB ports are bad (I used good cables). Not a huge emergency, but I'd like to exhaust the possibilities for my mom's sake. Thanks for any guidance! :)

TracFone BYOP Program / Re: List of BYOP compatible phones
« on: October 02, 2016, 07:47:24 pm »
I bought a used Note 4 N910W8 (Canadian, or "international" version) a few months ago. All the Tracfone features work perfectly with it.

TracFone BYOP Program / What determines "bring your own" compatibility?
« on: January 19, 2016, 10:06:38 pm »
So I've been reading the BYO page at the tracfone review blog for well over a year, with keen interest. Last winter it seemed pretty obvious that either tracfone or verizon was limiting what phones could be used. There was even speculation on another forum that verizon would be limiting them to low-end phones forever so tracfone wouldn't be competing with their high-end market.

This winter the scene is entirely different; the list of phones you can use with the SIM kits is almost identical to the list of phones available from any of the contract-phone carriers.

So my question is, what (or who) now determines compatibility? For instance, the BYO page lists the Galaxy Note II and III, but not the more recent 4 or 5.

I realize this is a basic question in the context of this forum, but as a potential shopper, I'm curious what your understanding is regarding the mechanism determining compatibility, or if anything goes as long as it works with the network in question?

Introductions / A Hearty Hello!
« on: January 19, 2016, 01:24:26 am »
Well, to be honest, I usually jump right into forums and start contributing. But...I'm not a phone developer, by any stretch of the term, so I thought I'd put all my cards on the table in an introductory post, so to speak  :P

I'm in my early 30s and have had the inernet for about 24 years, but I feel like I'm the last person on earth to get a smartphone. I had various "dumb" tracfones up until last christmas, when prices finally made it possible for the purchase of an android.

I'd describe myself as a power user, in the sense that I like to explore the capabilities of my computers to the limits of my abilities. So I bought an Alcatel One Touch Pop Icon; no rooting, 2gb memory, insane kitkat memory limitation. Frankly, I was banking on the phone being rooted sometime within like 6 months. Needless to say I did not understand that obscure pay-as-you-go phones are not the hackers' priority.

So I still have my Alcatel. Not a terrible phone, but I have cycled through the available memory at least 4 times, and running Sygic with 4 large state maps means I frequently have to delete anything else I've loaded.

So! In a word, I'm ready for a new phone, and how. I really doubt I'll be buying one of the tracfone offerings, after reading the lackluster reviews for the best options like the Sunset.

My mother still has the Pop Icon, and I'd like to improve her experience if anyone here has a flash of brilliance, but frankly I'm almost certainly going for one of the (lately) top-of-the-line Samsungs available through the BYO program. I'd still like to get the best out of this without ruining my tracfone service, so I hope I'll be able to ask you knowledgeable folks about rooting, unlocking, ROMs, etc.

Anyway, I think this is a fantastic idea for a forum, and I'll be keeping a keen eye out for people who can outsmart these devices!
