Stuff safe to delete in /system/
« on: October 14, 2015, 04:41:51 pm »
NOTE: A much better way to handle this is to use TitaniumBackup's 'freeze' function, Not only do you get to keep your apps but it seems to bypass bootloop-issues when deleting system-level stuff.
Also the free CCleaner app can show ALL apps using RAM, including system-level stuff, it can also freeze/disable sysapps but for some reason wouldn't do so for me, so I had to pay for TitaniumBackup. Use the two to tweak your system as you want.

By freezing most of the sysapps I never used, I've managed to free up about ~50mb of extra RAM, enough to use one resource-intensive app without having background music shut off. Pretty worth it imo.

--

this is a list of what I've found to be safe to delete in the /system/app and /system/priv-app folders. I'll break it into two sections, stuff that's pure bloat and stuff that may cause problems with certain apps.

note that you need ROOT permissions, and you should have a recovery installed and *make a backup of your stock ROM* before deleting anything. otherwise you will brick your phone and have to buy a new one.

(you have to make an account at androidarea51.com to view the links)
Root instructions: http://androidarea51.com/all-things-root/working-root-for-lg-optimus-fuel-woot/
Recovery instructions: http://androidarea51.com/all-things-root/twrp-cwm-and-a-way-to-boot-to-them!/

---PURE BLOAT---

/system/app/

aftwd - qualcomm service that lets you mirror your phone display to a TV over wifi. USELESS!
ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter
CloudPrint
Gmail
GMS_Maps
GoogleCalendar/GoogleContacts
GoogleTTS
LGBluetooth4 - if you don't care for bluetooth go ahead, Battery stats still claim it's using battery even with it frozen. Doesn't show up in RAM though, unless it's bundled with the rest of 'Android System'
LGEIME_THEME_LOVELY
LGHome_Theme_Bunnyfairy
LGPartnerBookmarksProvider
LGSearchWidgetProvider
LicenseProvider
MediaUploader - Part of the Picasa service, useless.
MyAccountInstaller
PrintSpooler
SVISettings - Apparently stands for Sunlight Visibility Improvement?
TalkBack
UnifiedEULA
Youtube

/system/priv-app/

GMScore
GoogleBackupTransport
GoogleFeedback
GoogleLoginService
GooglePartnersetup
GoogleServicesFramework
  - all this google stuff can go if you don't use any google services. personally, i'd rather have the space and sideload whatever apps i need. Play Services hogs up a ton of RAM.
InputDevices - Not sure, I would guess things like bluetooth keyboards.
LGAlarmClock
LGApplicationManager
LGBasicDreams
LGBrowser
LGCalculator
LGCalendar
LGClockWidget
LGEmail
LGFavoriteContactsWidget
LGFileManager
LGGallery
LGLiveWallpaperPicker
LGMusic
LGPhotoTable
LGQMemo
LGSettingsAccessibility
LGStartupWizard
LGStreamingPlayer
LGTasks
LGUpdateCenter
LGVideos
LGVoiceCommand/Service
LGVoiceRecorder
MLT - Apparently LG spyware
OneTimeInitializer
Phonesky - aka Google Play
SetupWizard
Street - Streetview w/ Google Maps
Velvet - Google Search
WAPservice - allows hyperlinks in SMS (keep if you like tracfone promo's)
WallpaperCropper - You can still set wallpapers, but they aren't resized for the 3.5" screen.

---MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS---
I deleted these and the phone still works fine, they support things like purchased apps from the play store and the cell phone itself. or I just couldn't find out what they do :p

/system/app

com.qualcomm.location - safe to delete if you don't care for location services.
com.anroid.keyguard/Lock Screen Settings - These manage the lockscreen, you can freeze them if you don't lock your phone.
DrmService - probably used for paid apps
ELTTest - Part of the hidden menus, for testing phone hardware.
GnssAirTest/GnssPosTest/GnssTest - GPS capabilities
HiddenMenu/IOTHiddenMenu/TracfoneHiddenMenu/VerizonHiddenMenu - Used by phone providers to configure your phone OTA. Would like to know if you can still add minutes to the phone with these deleted..
HTMLviewer - for reading HTML files natively
FusedLocation - location service, combines GPS with wifi location to save battery. Keep if you want location services.
LTATCMD - connects phone to PC, don't know if USB drivers or some balogna wifi software.
LGDefaultAccount - ?
LGDivXDRM - Probably for movies downloaded from play store
LGDMSClient - Part of OTA updating.
LGDRM - I'm assuming another DRM client.
LGFOTA - Firmware Over The Air, used to update apps/OS. Dunno if that'll ever happen with this phone.
LGMediaProvider - connects stock apps to stored media. If you delete this you can't set a custom ringtone, alarm, use the Music/Gallery/Video apps. 3rd party apps work fine though.
PermissionToAccessLgeApi - ?
QcomQMIPermissions - ?
qcrilmsgtunnel - ?
shutdownlistener(qualcomm) - ?
shutdownmoniter(LG) - ?
TimeService - part of qualcomm CPU settings to keep accurate time, doesn't seem to impair anything though.

/system/priv-app

BackupRestoreConfirmation - Used when backing phone up to Google servers
SharedStorageBackup - Also used for backup to Google
ConfigUpdater - Google service of some kind
FontServer - ?
LGInstallService - ?

Things to note:

Deleting LGMediaProvider and another LG app (can't figure out which one) prevents you from setting a custom ringtone/notification tone/wallpaper; you can set these up beforehand (be sure to put it in internal storage and not the SD card) and then delete the system apps.

You CAN delete the stock phone/contacts apps if you want to replace them with another dialer app, but Dialer/Contacts is necessary to make emergency calls.

You can also replace the stock LGHome launcher, but have the other launcher already loaded and running before you delete LGHome or else you'll render the stock rom useless (can't access app drawer)

---

And lastly, stuff that DEFINITELY breaks the phone. DO NOT DELETE THESE.

/system/app/
CertInstaller - Necessary to use WiFi
DocumentsUI - Causes bootloop.
ExternalStorageProvider - System app, forget what it does exactly but I know it's important.
KeyChain - Manages your passwords.
LGEIME - native keyboard.
LGSystemServer - Tempting to delete, but will disable haptic feedback and make your LED glow endlessly.
PackageInstaller/PacProcessor - You can't install .apk's without these.
Stk - Sim Toolkit, probably important.

/system/priv-app/
DefaultContainerService - Necessary to install apk's.
LGDownloadProvider - Necessary to download stuff onto the stock ROM.
LGInCallUI/Keyguard/Settings/SystemUI/TeleService - Integral to stock ROM.

---

That's it! If any of this stuff breaks your phone please post it and I'll update this (you did have a recovery installed, right?) I'm still testing the phone so I may have to update this sooner or later, but as far as I can tell it's good.

Any idea on how much resourses(disk space, mem)  is saved with all these deletes? Does it seem leaner/snappier?

Do you have a twrp backup you'd be willing to share?

It's been a while, I probably cleared out ~150mb of space. I definitely got ~40mb of RAM free, though that mostly came from disabling Google Services. I'd have to do a factory reset and repeat the process to get the exact numbers, having deleted/frozen apps I never used doesn't make it 'snappier' per se but it does let me keep more apps active in the background. Kinda nice, though nowhere close to what you'd get with 1gb RAM.

For the most part the stock rom on this phone is pretty decent. How badly do you need a backup? I could upload one, but yeah I'd have to factory reset everything, not much trouble since most my APK's are backed up anyway.

If he already had a slimmed down version that was tested, it would save me the time recreating the wheel. ;)

I can make a precreated backup of the phone if I know what apps you don't want in it

I updated the OP, use the free CCleaner app to find out each and every service using your RAM, and use TitaniumBackup to freeze them. Freezing seems to bypass the bootloop issues that arise when deleting system apps, plus if you ever need them you can just re-enable them, eg freeze Google Services to save a ton of RAM and unfreeze them whenever you need to update your apps.

That being said I can't see the benefit of uploading a modded version of a proprietary rom, I still get occasions where stock apps hang up or force quit. Removing random parts of a system you didn't build yourself will reduce system resources yeah but on the same token, bugs everywhere.

Better to just backup your own phone and freeze what sysapps you personally don't care for, for example I got rid of the native video and gallery apps, but still keep the alarm clock/music apps. Also, apps you download personally can hog just as much ram as sysapps, so you'll have to deal with it eventually.

CCleaner will tell you every service being used, so you can just do process-of-elimination to find what you want frozen. If you want to free up system space (2gb is enough for me I just care about saving RAM) refer to the above list to know what's safe and what isn't.

I might upload a fresh stock rom if I ever reset my phone but for now it really isn't worth the trouble.

For the record, the phone is indeed snappier in doing all this, and this method works for any phone with any stock rom.

Actually I have 4 optimus fuels laying around and was thinking of slimming down the base and adding a few games on it and give it to my niece and nephews. They are not quite old enough so maybe next year. Good info though.

The Fuel is a good phone to give your kids, it's very durable against drops and costs like $10 :)
