Runtime in developer options
« on: September 16, 2017, 01:12:24 pm »
So, I've never seen this answered or asked before.  Would you switch the runtime from Dalvik to ART in the developer options menu?  Why or why not?  I've heard ART in early KitKat devices wasn't reliable, but figure you guys are the experts here.

I tried switching to ART when I first got this phone in early 2015, but it wouldn't stick after rebooting.  I see relevant lib and binary files in '/system' but never investigated to figure out how to get it working.  Now I'm curious again.

Did a little more research, and it seems as if you can switch back.  Some had problems, but the posts I found were 2014-2015.  I'd probably make a TWRP backup first.  The only thing I am not sure if it will work is Xposed.  I may try this bit want to wait for a few more replies to see what others have experienced.

I would definitely make a TWRP backup, Xposed has messed up a few of my devices. I would stick with the runtime the phone comes with, as its probably the best preforming one on lollipop and under.

Makes sense, and you are the expert here so I will stick to your advice for sure.  I guess the old saying "if it ain't broke" applies.

Thanks

i believe you need the deodexed stock rom for the switch to work

Makes sense, since ODEX files are optimized for Dalvik run-time.  Why didn't I think of that?!

So CWM or TWRP backup and deodex (or vice versa), then switch to ART VM, then wipe Dalvik cache.  I think I'll pass until more is uncovered about running ART on KitKat ROMs.
